Jupiter

2004

These Jupiter images were taken with a 10" Meade LX-50 using a Philips ToUCam Pro webcam and a 2X Barlow (f/20)

Jupiter on 3/19/2004
Jupiter on 3/20/2004.    Io can be seen just beginning its transit of Jupiter's face, while Ganymede can be seen about to end its transit.  The dark spot in the center of the white band is Ganymede's shadow.
Jupiter on 3/20/2004.  Later in the event, Ganymede has now cleared the planet while Io's shadow has now begun its transit.
Jupiter on 3/20/2004.  Io's shadow is catching Ganymede's because of the greater orbital speed of Io's orbit of Jupiter.  This and the four images below were used to make the animated file directly below
Jupiter on 3/20/2004.  Later in the same event.
Jupiter on 3/20/2004.Ganymede's shadow is about to exit Jupiter's face, while Io can be seen hovering just ahead of its shadow.
Jupiter on 3/20/2004.  Io is exiting its transit.
Jupiter on 3/20/2004.  Io and Ganymede and their shadows have exited Jupiter.  Also, Europa has just exited eclipse by Jupiter's shadow.  The angle of Jupiter's shadow is such that Europa appears far from the planet.
Jupiter on 3/20/2004.  Animated file.
Jupiter on 3/27/2004.  Animated file of rare triple shadow event.  Unfortunately, the seeing that evening at my observing site degenerated making the latter images of lower quality.

2005

The first four pictures from 2005 were taken with my 10" Meade LX-50.  In May, I received my Takahashi Mewlon 250.  All later pictures were taken with this telescope.
